Modelling and Simulation

Overview

A scientific approach to problem-solving goes beyond theorising. Experiments are required to test hypotheses and make evidence-based decisions. However, experiments can be costly, time-consuming and not always feasible to carry out in the case of complex projects. These challenges are circumnavigated by using mathematical knowledge and computing power to create models and simulations of the real world.

Modelling and simulation (M&S) is the use of a physical, mathematical, or logical representation of a system, object, phenomena, or process. Modelling and simulation (M&S) is the use of a physical, mathematical, or logical representation of a system, object, phenomena, or process. Simulation is often used to model phenomenons and processes as a runnable or actionable format. In addition, modelling and simulations are often used to generate data for analysis and predictions required to make informed and evidenced-based decisions in a risk-free environment.

Career and Industry Opportunities
Architects use models to project the vision of their designs to project owners and investors. They work with civil engineers to use simulation to help them understand the possible problems a structure may encounter. Oil and Gas engineers model digital twins of an oil well to examine the effect of design changes on it.

The applications of simulation in the industry are numerous. The industries where modelling and simulation are relevant include Aviation, Automotive, Biotechnology, Construction, Film, Power and Energy, Real Estate and Facility Management,  Healthcare and Medical Sciences, Industrials & Manufacturing, Media, and Transport & Logistics.
