They enable you to gain experience in remote collaboration, a growing trend in today’s digital world.

Hybrid or Blended internships combine elements of physical and remote experiences. This hybrid model offers the best of both worlds, allowing interns to engage in on-site work while also working remotely. A hybrid internship offers a well-rounded experience, accommodating different learning styles and preferences. They also expose you to the advantages and challenges of both physical and remote work environments.
On-site internships used to be the only acceptable type of internship at a majority of higher institutions and remain the most preferred by many. However, due to changes in the world of work, higher institutions have become more open to the idea of a remote or hybrid internship.
It is important to check with your institution which type of internships are acceptable before you apply. Institutions often want students to intern at organisations where they can work with a staff or supervisor who the institution’s representative can interact with to get a report on their performance.
Internships can be categorized into various types based on the period of the year organisations make openings for them and their duration. The most popular is summer internships which usually occur from May to August and may extend to September to provide participants with valuable hands-on experience in their chosen field. A summer internship is common with large and global organisations.
Year-round internships are not tied to a specific season and can occur throughout the year. These year-round internships are more flexible and are often available in small to medium-sized organisations that are not rigid in their hiring process.
Internships can also be categorised based on payment. An internship can be paid or unpaid. Paid internships provide a salary or stipend for your time and efforts. Unpaid internships compensate with other kinds of benefits that are not monetary. Unpaid internships are often offered by government agencies, non-profits, arts and media organisations, small-sized businesses and some startups. The compensation is often in the exposure and opportunities they provide interns.
Other types of internships are micro-internships. Micro-internships provide short-term projects or tasks that can be completed virtually. These internships provide focused experiences, allowing interns to develop specific skills and make meaningful contributions to projects. These internships are often provided through online platforms and may take 3 to 10 hours to complete. They offer a convenient way to gain experiences you can add to your CV or LinkedIn profile.
